Dig a little deeper

Beyond the fascinating looks of Phlomis, it is an amazing botanical. It is loved by pollinators, and people alike. Phlomis derives from the Greek: phlogmos or 'flame'. As it turns out, the hairy leaves absorb oil readily and were used as lamp wicks for their ability to keep a steady flame.
But Phlomis is also notable because of the structure and symmetry of the flowers, so that only big bees, such as bumblebees, are able to pry the petals apart to sup the nectar.
